The residential plumbing system in a home is composed of two separate subsystems. One system brings domestic/fresh water in, and the other takes the sanitary wastewater out of the home. The sanitary wastewater system or drain-waste-vent (DWV) is made of two parts, one is of the drain waste and the other is the vent. The drain waste removes sewage and greywater from the home and the vent regulates air pressure, facilitating flow. The domestic main water line that comes into the home is fed from the municipality (town, city, etc…) or from a well. The water pressure is normally 50-75 psi and should always have an accessible main water shut off valve. This valve is normally located at the well, water meter, or at the outside of the home before the water line enters the home. Knowing where the main water shut off valve is, and that it works properly is crucial to the protection of your home. The main water line comes into the home, off this line feeds all the home’s faucets, fixtures and appliances.
The sanitary wastewater system drains out of the home into a septic system or goes into a sewer system to your local municipal processing plant. Where your sanitary drain line comes out of the home on the outside of the building, there should always be a two way clean out. This clean out is normally 3” or 4” in diameter with a threaded plug. It will be cast iron/ brass plug, PVC or ABS and is normally located about three feet off the foundation. Knowing where this clean out is and that it is exposed at ground level for easy access is also crucial to the protection of you home. In case of a sewer line back up you or a professional can access and asses if the backup is in the home, in the yard to the street or your septic system is full and needs service.
The fixtures, faucets and appliances in your home are attached to these plumbing systems. Knowing the building codes for the correct repair or installation is crucial to you and your family’s health. Leaking pipes can cause mold and mildew. Improper connections on sanitary systems can have sewage leaking into the home with methane gas.
